Manteo
A Croatoan man who traveled to England, learned English, and returned with the Roanoke expeditions. Manteo was connected to the Croatoan community and was formally recognized by the English as a useful intermediary and ally. His presence makes Croatoan more than a mysterious word: it was also the name of a real place and a community with whom the English had contact.
