Captain Benjamin Briggs
Master of the Mary Celeste and one of the ten people missing when the vessel was boarded in December 1872. Briggs sailed with his wife, Sarah, and their two-year-old daughter, Sophia. The documented record establishes his command, the ship’s course, and his disappearance; it does not establish what he believed, why he may have left the vessel, or what happened afterward.
